Bucida buceras has very dense wood that is highly appreciated for a popular ornamental shade tree for the tropics.

Also known as Black olive,  is a spiny, wide-spreading, slow-growing evergreen tree with very dense foliage and a spreading crown that becomes oval to rounded with age. Tolerant of air pollution.

 Planting & Care 

Sunlight: It requires bright sunlight

Water: This tree likes to remain moist, but not soggy. Water whenever the soil is starting to become dry to the touch. Winter watering might need to be reduced depending on the brightness and warmth of the space. 

Soil: This hardy ornamental plant needs rich, moist, well-drained soil..

Fertilizer: use organic fertilizer, compost, or balanced liquid fertilizer that includes nitrogen. “Balanced” indicates a fertilizer that features equal amounts of three ingredients, such as a 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 fertilizer. 

Temperature: Do not expose to temperatures below freezing, bring indoors or cover if 40 degrees or below is forecasted. 

Pruning: Regular pruning is required to keep the tree from becoming too heavy on top
