Spathodia plants commonly known as the African tulip tree is an evergreen or semi-deciduous tree of the Bignoniaceae family, with pinnate leaves divided into oblong to ovate, leathery, dark green leaflets and, in spring and summer, panicles or racemes of bell-shaped, scarlet flowers with yellow petal margins it can grow from 10 – 35 meters tall. The wood is difficult to burn, so the tree is also valuable for fire-resistant landscaping.
Planting & Care
SunLight: Spathodia plants will survive in shade, but demands full sun for fast growth and best flowering.
Soil: Grows in a well-drained rich, light soil
Watering: These trees grow best with plenty of moisture, but will shed their leaves and endure drought.
Fertilizer: Fertilize early in the plant s growing cycle with an all-purpose fertilizer.
Temperature: Top growth will be killed at 28-30ºF (-2.2 – -1.1ºC), but the roots may survive down to 22ºF (-5.6ºC) or below.
